I am using third-part image in my master's thesis. How do I go about obtaining permission for reuse?

Answer

To start figuring out the permissions, probably your starting point for each image is to find out who published the original work it came from and then explore its website for information about copyright permissions.

For example, if the first image was in a book published by Guildford Press (https://www.guilford.com/), you can see a link for "Permissions" under the heading "Resources" on the left-hand side of the page. Reading the instructions, you'll find that Guilford uses a company called the Copyright Clearance Center to manage permissions: You'll need to create an account, and then complete an online form about your intended usage for this item CCC will then provide Guilford's terms for reuse. (Note: A lot of journals also now use CCC for permissions.)

To locate permission for items originally published in journal articles, go to the journal's home page and look for a link to info about permissions and reprints. For instance, for an item originally published in the Journal of Education (https://journals.sagepub.com/home/JEX,) you'll see a link to permissions information on the right-hand side: https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/journals-permissions.

For other of sources, if the permissions steps are not readily apparent, you may need to use a "Contact Us" form to email the organization responsible for the publication image.
